When putting together a set of hashtags to use, always keep in mind who you are trying to target. For example, if you are a vegan skincare business, hashtagging an image of your product with #love will be much less effective than using #veganskincare.


It’s always a great idea to check out your competition to see what hashtags they are using. This is one of the best ways to find relevant hashtags. Also using the drop down menu and searching for ‘related hashtags’ can help you find many relevant tags.


As we said before, keep your hashtags specific to your niche. When it comes to using hashtags effectively, you want to ensure your content is reaching the right people. Have a mix of more generic hashtags and more specific ones and avoid any that are too gimmicky or ‘spammy’. Developing your own hashtag is also a great way to set yourself and your business apart and encourages your community to use the hashtag themselves (yay for more engagement!). It’s also great to include ones that are funny and creative! If your business has a physical location, including hashtags relevant to that is a great way to reach your local community.


Don’t use the exact same hashtags over and over again, try to switch them up. We recommend having a few different sets of 30 on hand and making them relevant to the different products/services you sell. Posting them in the comments or in the caption doesn’t make a difference to your post’s engagement, but having them tucked away in the comments looks much neater!


Keep an eye on how your hashtags are performing by using your Instagram analytics tool. You will be able to see how many profiles your post reached from hashtags alone. This will allow you to know what hashtags are performing well and can help you to decide what ones to continue using in the future.
